Rosh Hashanah in Chabad Philosophy
“The Power Of You”
Rosh Hashanah means “Head Of The Year”. The head is the seat of life. From the head, life flows to the entire body. So too, on Rosh Hashanah all the blessings for the upcoming year are given. We crown G-d as our king and we ask our Heavenly Father and King to bless us and to provide us with all our needs for a good sweet year.
So how and when did this tradition begin?
It all began over five thousand years ago when G-d desired and chose to create a physical world with human beings who have free choice to crown G-d as their king and follow his commandments. Adam and Eve were created Friday afternoon, the sixth day of creation, formed from the earth on top of Mount Moriah in Jerusalem.
Then G-d decided that every year on Rosh Hashanah, the birthday anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve, we humans are empowered to rekindle G-d’s desire to be our king for the upcoming new year. We achieve this by willingly submitting ourselves and accepting G-d as our king. So we blow the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah as we willingly crown G-d as our king.
The annual Shofar blowing-coronation is the highlight of Rosh Hashanah. It rekindles the desire of G-d to want to be our king for the upcoming year. Although we are just finite human beings of flesh and blood living in a physical limited world, G-d happily agrees on Rosh Hashanah to lovingly care and be involved in each detail of our life and to have a personal royal relationship with each of us. Our life truly matters.
G-d doesn’t want to be a dictator who rules by force. G-d desires your free choice, your vote. Your excitement and enthusiasm to willingly coronate him as your personal king. The Kingship of G-d is incomplete without you. For “there is no king without a nation”.
Even the angels in heaven do not have this coronation power. Because angels do not have free choice. The behavior of the angels is preprogrammed in advance. Angels are in a sense like robots. Only you, as a human being, can choose to grant G-d his desired wish to be your personal king. You have the keys, the power of this decision is totally yours.
The purpose and goal of creation is G-d’s desire to have a home in our physical world. A world which is conscious of an “Eye that sees and an ear that listens”. We are empowered to transform the world into a beautiful garden, with plantings of goodness and kindness, Torah and Mitzvot. A physical world which humanity permeates with holiness and Divine presence. A Divine home. Each Mitzvah we do transforms another part of existence and infuses the world with a dose of holiness. Your every good deed counts.
When we fully accomplish this task, the metaphoric curtains will open and we will see the fruits of our labor. We will literally see the revelation of G-d with our physical eyes. How G-d is the source of every particle of existence. A world of Moshiach. Where heaven and earth live in revealed harmony. Universal peace.
The Rebbe prophetically tells us that this great era, as promised to us by the biblical prophets and articulated by Maimonides, is about to be revealed. Humanity’s accomplishments of thousands of years is accumulative. The task of refining the world is accomplished. Moshiach is ready to come now. It is only on our part to do something additional in the realm of goodness and kindness.
May G-d grant you a good sweet year and may we all merit to speedily celebrate this happy time, singing and dancing in the streets of Jerusalem and Israel, when all the nations of the world will join in harmony and proclaim the Bet Hamikdash, the Holy Temple as the House of Prayer for all the nations. On the very same mountain where Adam and Eve were created more then five thousand years ago on Rosh Hashanah. The place where It all began.
Then, when Moshiach is revealed, we will see all our loved ones from all of history and we shall live forever. Death will we swallowed and gone forever. We will happily be occupied with the knowledge of G-d, with eternal joy, peace, health and happiness.
As we approach Rosh Hashanah let’s inspire ourselves to celebrate and maximize our potential, to appreciate our infinite value. To celebrate the gift of life. G-d intentionally started the world with one person. Because the world was created and waiting just for you. And if we make a mistake and we stray far away, just return home. Our loving Father in Heaven is eagerly waiting to hug and embrace you. He always forgives and loves you unconditionally.
Aspire to always grow, with the spirit of youth, to live according to the Divine blueprint and master plan of creation. A life a goodness and kindness. A life of meaningful celebration.
Wishing you, Shana Tova Umesuka. A good sweet year.
