Our Mother. Our Hero. Royalty.

Hi

Wishing you Gut Shabbos

Candle Lighting October 4 NY Metro 6:13pm

Four days after Rosh Hashanah, The 6th of Tishrei is the anniversary of the passing of the Rebbe’s mother Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson. It happened at the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital, late Shabbat afternoon 1964.

As we honor the Rebbe’s mother, it is appropriate to dedicate some thoughts to our Mother of Royalty.

Rebbetzin Chana was born 28 Tevet 1880 to her parents Rabbi Meir Shlomo Halevi and Rebbetzin Rochel Yanovsky. Her father was Chief Rabbi of Nikolayev Ukraine, relatively   not far from the port city of Odessa.

Rebbetzin Chana was a leader. During World War One thousands of Jewish refugees flooded the city of Yakatrinislav where her illustrious husband Rabbi Levi Yitschok Schneerson was Chief Rabbi. It was Rebbetzin Chana who was at the forefront of organizing hospitality arrangements for the thousands of refugees. The Rebbe told how seeing his mother working energetically day and night to help the refugees was ingrained in his memory for life.

In 1939 the Russian communists arrested her husband and subsequently exiled him for five year to the remote bug-infested village of Chili Kazakhstan where the temperatures were unbearable. From the freezing winter to the unbearable summer heat and insects. Starvation and hunger was prevalent.

Despite the danger and hardship, Rebbetzin Chana chose to voluntarily join her husband in exile. Risking her life and her health, Rebbetzin Chana creatively produced ink for her husband to be able to write Torah thoughts on the margins of his holy books.

Some of these sacred manuscripts Rebbetzin Chana successfully smuggled out of Russia in 1946 and they are studied today around the globe.

The respect and honor which the Rebbe gave to his mother is legendary. From the Rebbe’s daily visits to his mother to the incredible respect and honor the Rebbe bestowed upon his mother,  gives us a glimpse into the life of a true Mother of Royalty.

The thousands of baby girls, mothers and grandmothers who are named in honor of Rebbetzin Chana are living testimony to the greatness of our beloved Mother of Royalty.

May we do a Mitzvah in honor of the Hillula-Yohrtseit of Rebbetzin Chana and may her heroic life and self sacrifice be an everlasting inspiration to us all to live proudly as Jews and always focus on the correct priorities. Helping those in need and maximizing the gift of life which the creator graciously gives each one of us.

Your good deed can bring Moshiach now!
