The prayer of “Shma Yisroel” has a special place in the heart of every Jew. It is the declaration of faith in the One G-d of Israel. Hear O Israel Hashem is our G-d Hashem is One.
The Hebrew word for one is Echod - אחד. However the word “one” does not exclude the number two. On the contrary. The word “one” is also used when you count many. Since there is only One G-d, It would seem more fitting to use the word Yocheed - יחיד which means “the only one”.
In Torah Or - Voeiro- the Alter Rebbe explains the reason why we say One - Echod. During the time of exile, G-d is hidden. He is here but not visible. The world can seem as if it is independent and disconnected from it’s source and Creator.
But G-d did not forsake the Jewish people. Every Jew has a special relationship with our loving Father In Heaven and has the power to bring the unity of G-d even into the darkness of the world.
The world has six directions. The four sides, up and down. The word Echod - אחד is spelled with the three letters of Alef, Ches and Daled. Which represent the unity of the One G-d of Israel in the seven heavens and earth and the four corners of the globe.
Every person is a small world. Life can seem confusing and pulling in many directions. A person has many different emotions, thoughts etc. At times a person may feel torn and fragmented.
Therefore the Torah uses the word Echod -אחד to emphasize the point that the unity of the One G-d of Israel permeates every aspect of existence including every aspect of our personal life. Hashem is literally everywhere. We are never alone. Darkness does not have any power to block the presence of G-d. Hashem Echod - אחד means that G-d cares and is controlling everything and He is personally here with us in every step of our life.
This gives us comfort and inspiration:
In life we may encounter challenges, loneliness and darkness. We may struggle with temptations, guilt and mistakes. The Alter Rebbe explains that we all have an inner personal battle to overcome our desires and choose the right path in accordance with Torah. But it is precisely this battle and your victory which bring G-d into the world in a revealed way.
You are empowered to reveal the truth of the One G-d of Israel in every aspect of life.
Never be discouraged. G-d is always with you in every step of your life!
Every time you defeat darkness and negativity, you give G-d a gift of pleasure. G-d created the world for you to defeat the darkness and illuminate the world with the light of Torah and Mitzvah, thereby making this world a Home for G-d, a world of Moshiach.
By you revealing “Hashem Echod” you are giving the world and yourself the gift of light, purpose and direction. A world of tranquility, unity and peace.
3 messages based on the teachings of the Rebbe:
1) The birthday of the Rebbe’s mother Rebbetzin Chana is 28 of Teves. The Rebbe told the story how during his childhood, his mother was in charge of helping the thousands of Jewish refugees who arrived in their city. Working selflessly day and night to ensure that every Jew was taken care of. The Rebbe said that this made a lifelong impression on him. Let’s honor the birthday of Rebbetzin Chana, Mother of Royalty, with a Mitzvah. Help a fellow Jew.
2) If you make a mistake and you were not successful in overcoming a temptation or a desire, don’t focus on the negative. It will only make you weaker and sad. Focus on the great new opportunity you now have to elevate yourself to a new, higher and better relationship with our loving Father In Heaven. As King Solomon says: Light is most appreciated after darkness.
3) Pregnancy and it’s challenges bring the greatest joy of a new baby. Exile is like a pregnancy. Don’t focus on the difficulties. Focus on the birth of the “new baby”. Your reward for your actions now is what you will enjoy when Moshiach is revealed. Invest now! You are G-d’s beloved child and you will be blessed to enjoy a life filled with revealed goodness and happiness.

מלכות יהודים והריון
לתפילת "שמע ישראל" יש מקום מיוחד בלבו של כל יהודי. זוהי הצהרת האמונה של כל יהודי בבורא העולם. שמע ישראל ה' אלוקינו ה' אחד.
המילה "אחד" אינה שוללת את המספר שתיים. אדרבה,המילה "אחד" משמשת גם כאשר סופרים דברים רבים. אפשר שיש אחד ויש גם שני ושלישי וכו׳. אם כן, מכיוון שיש רק אלוקים אחד, לכאורה נראה שיותר היה מתאים להשתמש במילה יחיד שפירושה הבורא הוא היחיד ואין שום דבר זולתו. כמו שכתוב ״אין עוד מלבדו״.
בתורה אור - וארא- מסביר אדמו"ר הזקן את הסיבה שבגללה אנו בדווקא אומרים אחד: בזמן הגלות ה' נסתר, הוא נמצא כאן אבל לא נראה לעינינו. אפשר לטעות ולחשוב שהעולם הוא כאילו עולם עצמאי ומנותק מהמקור שלו ומהבורא שלו.
אבל ה' לא עזב את העם היהודי. לכל יהודי יש קשר ומערכת יחסים מיוחדת עם אבינו האוהב שבשמים ובכוחו של כל יהודי להביא את אחדות ה' גם אל חשכת העולם.
לעולם יש שישה כיוונים. ארבעת הצדדים, ולמעלה ולמטה. המילה אחד מאויתת משלוש האותיות אלף, חית, דלד אותיות אלו מייצגים את אחדות ה' אחד של יעם שראל בשבעת רקיעי השמים והארץ ובארבע פינות תבל.
כל אדם הוא עולם קטן. החיים יכולים להיראות מבולבלים ומושכים לכיוונים רבים. גם לאדם יש הרבה רגשות, מחשבות וכיוונים וכו'. עד שלפעמים אדם עלול להרגיש קרוע ומפוצל.
לכן התורה משתמשת במילה "אחד" כדי להדגיש את הנקודה שהאחדות של ה׳ אחד מחלחלת לכל היבט של הקיום כולל כל היבט וחלק בחיינו האישיים. הבורא נמצא ממש בכל מקום. שום דבר לא קיים באופן עצמאי בלעדיו. אנחנו אף פעם לא לבד. ״ה׳ אחד״ אומר שלהבורא אכפת והוא נמצא באופן אישי כאן איתנו ובכל שלב בחיינו.
זה נותן לנו חיזוק והשראה:
בחיים אנו עלולים להיתקל באתגרים, בדידות וחושך. אנו צריכים להיאבק בפיתויים, אשמה וטעויות. אדמו״ר הזקן מסביר שלכולנו יש קרב אישי פנימי להתגבר על רצונותינו ולבחור בדרך הנכונה בהתאם לתורה. אבל דווקא הקרב הזה והנצחון שלך מביאים את ה' לעולם בדרך גלויה.
אתה יכול לגלות את האמת של ה׳ אחד של עם ישראל בכל חלק של החיים.
לעולם אל תתייאש. ה' תמיד איתך בכל צעד בחייך!
בכל פעם שאתה מנצח את החושך והשליליות, אתה נותן לאלוקים מתנת עונג. ה' ברא את העולם בשבילך כדי שתנצח את החושך ותאיר את העולם באור התורה והמצווה, ובכך להפוך את העולם הזה לבית דירה מואר להבורא, עולם של משיח.
בכך שאתה חושף את "השם אחד" אתה נותן לעולם ולעצמך את מתנת האור, המטרה והכיוון. עולם של מרגוע, אחדות ושלווה.
3 מסרים המבוססים על תורת הרבי:
1) יום הולדתה של אמו של הרבי הרבנית חנה הוא כ"ח בטבת. הרבי סיפר כיצד בימי ילדותו הייתה אמו אחראית על הסיוע לאלפי הפליטים היהודים שהגיעו לעירם. פעלה ללא אנוכיות יומם וליל כדי להבטיח שכל יהודי יטופל ויסודר. הרבי אמר שהמרץ והמסירות נפש של אמו עשה עליו רושם לכל החיים. בואו נכבד את יום הולדתה של הרבנית חנה, אם המלכות, במצווה. עזור לעוד יהודי בכל הלב.
