Purim Jews & Lottery

Purim is of our most joyous holidays. We celebrate the miracle of our survival after Haman’s unprecedented evil decree to annihilate all Jews in one day. 

With his vile antisemitic hatred, Haman made a lottery to choose the day to execute his evil plan. The word Purim means Lottery. But why choose to name the holiday Purim, which doesn’t seem to refer to the the miracle, on the contrary, it seems to remind of the tragic lottery of Haman? 

The Alter Rebbe in Torah Or -Hosofos Megillas Esther- gives an incredibly inspiring explanation in answer to this question. 

The Alter Rebbe explains:

Haman was a shrewd antisemite. Haman knew that the Jewish people are the beloved and protected children of G-d. Therefore Haman was looking for a way which would enable him to destroy the Jews. The Lottery was his evil solution. 

Since Haman knew that on a rational and logical  level G-d will not allow him to hurt the Jews, Haman wanted to bypass the rational level.  He wanted to tap into and reach a higher level, a level where G-d is absolutely Infinite and G-d is not limited by any logic. On the highest level, night and day are equal before G-d. In the face of infinity, there is no limitation of logic. 

Haman knew that a lottery is not based on logic. Haman was seeking to exploit the infinity of G-d. Therefore Haman calculated that on the level of Infinity -עצמות- “lottery”, where all things are equal, the Jews would not have special protection. On this level, Haman thought that G-d would not treat the Jews in a special way.  

The Megillah tells us that Haman got close to executing his evil exploitation. But the Jews never flinched. The Jews never lost faith. Not even for a moment. They never thought to consider even for a moment to abandon Judaism in order to save their life. Despite the evil decree of Haman, the Jews remained loyal to G-d. 

G-d proclaimed: Even on the level of Infinity -עצמות- where all things are equal, even where there is no logic or reason, nevertheless G-d still chooses the Jewish people as His beloved children! He will protect the Jews as the pupile of His eye. G-d and the Jew are One. Inseparable. 

The essence of G-d chooses the essence of the Jew. It is not negotiable!

This Infinite love of G-d to the Jewish people, was revealed by Haman's lottery. It is the level of Lottery -פור- which symbolizes unconditional love, because there is no logic in who is the winner of a lottery. Even on the level of Infinity, where everything is seemingly equal, nevertheless G-d chooses to love the Jew. 

As the prophet Malachi says: Although Jacob and Esav are twin brothers, nevertheless G-d says: “I love Jacob and I despise Esav”! Therefore the Megillah intentionally named the holiday with the name of Purim which means Lottery. Because Purim emphasizes the unlimited, unconditional and infinite love of G-d to every Jew. Even on the level of “Lottery”, even when it’s not logical. 

This gives us unlimited joy and inspiration:

Purim is the day -every year- in which G-d reveals His unconditional love for every Jew. Even to a Jew who logically may not seem to deserve this love. Nevertheless, G-d loves, hugs and protects every Jew unconditionally. On Purim the light of G-d’s bond and eternal love to every Jew shines brightly. Purim in a sense is even higher then Yom Kippur. The unity of G-d and the Jew. 

On Purim every Jew celebrates this higher level of Infinity. Higher then logic -עד דלא ידע- above rational. We reach and touch the world of Infinity. We cherish, rejoice and celebrate our unbreakable bond with our loving Father In Heaven. 

This is why we say Lchayim on Purim. It’s not about meaningless intoxication. It is about expressing our unlimited joy -עד דלא ידע- our deepest appreciation and happiness. Beyond logical and rational understanding. Because we know that our relationship with G-d is stronger and higher then logic. The love is not limited and not contingent upon any conditions. 

Purim is empowering and uplifting: Even on the level of absolute infinity -עצמות- G-d chose and desired that the Jewish people build for Him a home in the lowest and physical world. On the highest and deepest level of the essence of G-d, where it’s not about logic -לא ידע- you are His most beloved and most precious possession. You and G-d are one! G-d chooses to need you!

Unleash your infinity. Celebrate your boundless, unparalleled and unique relationship with G-d. You are a gift to the world, a piece of G-d on planet earth. Nothing can destroy your priceless value. Maximize your unlimited potential. Relaunch yourself this Purim. It’s your moment of new opportunity. Your deal of a lifetime!

You are the winner of the richest Lottery!

3 messages based on the teachings of the Rebbe:

1) You deserve unlimited happiness. You are the child and prince / princess of G-d. Never allow the fallacy of negativity and darkness to define you. You are always loved by G-d beyond logic. Nothing can bring you down. Rise to the dawn of your new beginning. Your true identity and true value are synonymous with G-d. 

Paradoxically, when you let go of your limited self definitions and limitations, including your past mistakes and wrongdoings, only then do you become infinitely capable. You can then achieve anything you wish because nothing can stop you as a representative of G-d. You become an Ambassador of G-d.

2) Purim we celebrate until we can’t distinguish between “Blessed Is Mordechei and Cursed Is Haman”. Purim we elevate our connection and relationship with our Heavenly Father to the level of Infinity. 

It is like when we do Teshuva and return to our Divine core and to our Divine essence. On this level where logic is finite and therefore irrelevant -עד דלא ידע- G-d forgives you for all sins and negativity and He transforms your spiritual debt into a spiritual fortune. זדונות נעשו לו כזכיות. On Purim this love of G-d for you and for every Jew is revealed. Even more then Yom Kippur which means “Like Purim”. 

3) We must always remember to help every Jew, especially during times of Holidays. Purim we must ensure that every Jew can celebrate a happy and joyous Purim, including hearing the Megillah, singing and celebrating with gifts of food. From hospitals to jails to any challenging situation. We never leave any Jew behind. Be a partner and inspire your fellow Jew. 

On Purim we are commanded in the Talmud  to give Charity “to every person who stretches out their hand”. Open your heart and hand to a fellow Jew and G-d will lovingly open His unlimited hand of blessings to you. Help a Jew celebrate Purim happily and G-d will grant you unlimited blessings, health and happiness.

יהודים פורים ומפעל הפיס

פורים אנו חוגגים את נס הישרדותנו לאחר גזירת המן הרשע להשמיד את כל היהודים ביום אחד.

המן עשה הגרלה - גורל כדי לבחור את היום לביצוע תוכניתו הרעה. משמעות המילה פורים היא הגרלה. אבל למה לבחור לקרוא לחג פורים על שם הגרלת המן הטראגית?

אדמו״ר הזקן בתורה אור -הוספות מגילת אסתר- נותן הסבר מעורר השראה בתשובה לשאלה זו.

אדמו״ר הזקן מסביר:

המן היה אנטישמי ממולח. המן ידע שהעם היהודי הוא ילדיו האהובים והמוגנים של אלוקים. לכן חיפש המן דרך שתאפשר לו להשמיד את היהודים. הגרלה: להפיל פור וגורל היה הפתרון המרושע שלו.

המן ידע שברמה הרציונלית ה' לא ירשה לו לפגוע ביהודים. אז המן רצה להגיע לרמה גבוהה יותר, לרמה שבה אלוקים הוא בהחלט אינסופי ואלוקים אינו מוגבל בהיגיון והסברים של שכל מוגבל. ברמה הגבוהה ביותר, לילה ויום שווים לפני ה'. מול האינסוף, אין הגבלה של ההיגיון. בלשון הקבלה והחסידות: למעלה מן הדעת. 

המן ידע שהגרלה אינה מבוססת על היגיון. המן ביקש לנצל את האינסוף של אלוקים. לכן המן חישב שברמת האינסוף -עצמות- "הגרלה" שבה כל הדברים שווים, לא תהיה ליהודים הגנה מיוחדת. ברמה זו המן חשב שה' לא יתייחס ליהודים בצורה מיוחדת.

המן התקרב לביצוע המרושע שלו. אבל היהודים מעולם לא נרתעו. הם מעולם לא איבדו אמונה. אפילו לא לרגע. הם אפילו לא שקלו לנטוש את היהדות כדי להציל את חייהם. אפילו לרגע לא נכנס בהם מחשבת חוץ ח״ו. במסירות נפש ובגאון יעקב עמדו חזק באמונתם.  

ה' הכריז: גם ברמת האינסוף 

-עצמות- , הדרגא של פור והגרלה שבה כל הדברים שווים, גם היכן שאין היגיון, שכל, דעת או רציונליות , בכל זאת ה' עדיין בוחר בעם היהודי כילדיו האהובים. כדברי הנביא: ואוהב את יעקב ואת עשיו שנאתי. 

מהות ה' בוחרת במהותו של היהודי. זה לא נתון למשא ומתן!

אהבת ה' האינסופית הזו לעם היהודי, התגלתה בהגרלת המן. פור וגורל הוא המסמל אהבה ללא תנאי, כי אין היגיון במי הזוכה בהגרלה. על כן כינתה המגילה את החג בכוונה בשם פורים שפירושו הגרלה. כי פורים מדגיש את אהבת ה' האינסופית הבלתי מוגבלת לכל יהודי. גם ברמה של "הגרלה", גם כשזה לא הגיוני.

זה נותן לנו שמחה והשראה בלתי מוגבלת:

פורים הוא היום -בכל שנה- בו מגלה ה' את אהבתו הבלתי מותנית לכל יהודי. אפילו ליהודי שבאופן הגיוני אולי נראה שהוא לא ראוי לאהבה הזו. למרות זאת, ה' אוהב, מחבק ומגן על כל יהודי ללא תנאי. בפורים כל יהודי חוגג את הרמה הגבוהה הזו של קשר של אינסוף. יותר גבוה מההיגיון. הקשר הבלתי שביר שלנו עם אבינו האוהב שבשמיים.

גם ברמת האינסוף המוחלט -עצמות- ה' בחר ורצה שהעם היהודי יבנה לו בית בעולם השפל והפיזי. נתאוה הקב״ה דירה בתחתונים. ברמה הגבוהה והעמוקה ביותר של מהות ה', שבה לא מדובר בהיגיון -לא ידע- אתה רכושו האהוב והיקר ביותר. אתה ואלוקים אחד!

שחרר את האינסוף שלך. חגוג את מערכת היחסים חסרת הגבולות והייחודית שלך עם אלוקים. אתה מתנה לעולם, חלק של אלוקים על פני כדור הארץ. שום דבר לא יכול להרוס את הערך היקר לך. תמקסם את הפוטנציאל הבלתי מוגבל שלך.

אתה הזוכה בהגרלה העשירה ביותר!

3 מסרים המבוססים על תורת הרבי:

1) מגיע לך שמחה ואושר בלתי מוגבל. אתה הילד והנסיך/נסיכה של אלוקים. לעולם אל תאפשר לשלילה להגדיר אותך. הזהות האמיתית והערך האמיתי שלך הם מאוחדים עם הבורא. 

באופן פרדוקסלי, כאשר אתה מוותר על הגדרות העצמיות והמוגבלות שלך, כולל טעויות העבר שלך, רק אז אתה הופך ליכולת אינסופית. כל יכול. אז אתה יכול להשיג כל מה שאתה רוצה כי שום דבר לא יכול לעצור נציג של אלוקים. אתה הופך להיות שגריר של רבון העולם.

3) עלינו לזכור תמיד לעזור לכל יהודי, במיוחד בתקופות של חגים. פורים עלינו להבטיח שכל יהודי יוכל לחגוג פורים שמח, כולל שמיעת מגילה ושירה וחגיגה במתנות אוכל ומשלוח מנות. מבתי חולים לבתי כלא וכל מצב מאתגר. לעולם לא משאירים אף יהודי מאחור.

בפורים מצווים אנו בתלמוד לתת צדקה "לכל המושיט ידו". פתח את לבך ואת ידך למען יהודי ואלוקים יפתח עבורך באהבה את ידו הבלתי מוגבלת של ברכות. עזור באהבה ליהודי לחגוג את פורים בשמחה וה' יעניק לך ברכות, בריאות ושמחה ללא הגבלה.
